When a Southern California heatwave arrives, a marginal cooling system is the first thing to fail. A few checks before the temperature spikes keep an overheating engine from stranding you on the side of the road.

When a Southern California heatwave settles in and the temperature climbs into the high 90s and beyond, the cooling system in your vehicle suddenly has far less margin to work with. An engine that ran fine all spring can start creeping toward the red on a long climb up to the mountains or in stop-and-go traffic through El Cajon, because the cooling system that kept it in check on a mild day is now fighting both the heat the engine makes and the heat of the air outside. Overheating is one of the most common ways summer strands a driver, and it is also one of the most preventable. A few checks before the next heatwave hits are what separate a non-event from a tow truck on the shoulder.
It helps to understand what the cooling system is actually doing, because every check follows from it. The engine burns fuel and produces enormous heat, and only a fraction of that energy turns into motion — much of the rest has to be carried away or the engine will quite literally cook itself. Coolant circulates through passages in the engine, absorbs that heat, and carries it to the radiator, where airflow pulls the heat out before the coolant cycles back. A water pump keeps it moving, a thermostat regulates the flow, and a fan ensures airflow when the vehicle is not moving fast enough to get it naturally. When any one of those pieces is weak, the whole system loses the headroom it needs on the hottest days.
Coolant is the place to start, both its level and its condition. Low coolant is the most common cause of overheating, and it is low for a reason — usually a slow leak somewhere in the system — so simply topping it off without finding why it dropped is a temporary fix at best. The condition matters too: coolant breaks down over time and loses its ability to transfer heat and resist boiling, and old, rusty, or contaminated coolant cools far less effectively than fresh fluid at the correct mix. If the coolant has not been changed in years or looks dirty, a flush and refill before summer is cheap insurance. This check should always be done on a cold engine, never by opening a hot, pressurized system.
The radiator and the hoses are the next thing to look at, because they are where the heat actually leaves and where leaks most often start. A radiator that is clogged internally with scale, or blocked externally by bugs, dust, and road debris packed into its fins, cannot shed heat the way it needs to. The hoses that carry coolant to and from it become a weak point with age — they harden, crack, and bulge, and a hose that bursts on the freeway dumps the coolant in seconds and leaves you stranded immediately. Hoses that feel rock-hard or spongy, or show cracking near the clamps, should be replaced before they fail rather than after.
The water pump, thermostat, and fan are the moving parts that keep the whole system functioning, and they fail in ways a driver should know about. A worn water pump can leak or lose its ability to circulate coolant effectively, and a pump that quits means the coolant stops moving entirely. A thermostat stuck closed blocks flow to the radiator and causes a fast overheat; stuck open, it can keep the engine from reaching proper temperature. The cooling fan is what pulls air through the radiator at low speed and idle, so a failed fan shows up first as overheating in traffic while the temperature stays normal at highway speed. Each of these is the kind of problem a technician can identify before it leaves you stuck.
There are warning signs worth taking seriously rather than driving through. A temperature gauge that climbs higher than normal, especially on grades or in traffic, is the most direct signal. The sweet, syrupy smell of coolant points to a leak, and puddles or bright-colored drips under the parked car confirm it. Steam from under the hood, or a heater that suddenly blows cold, can both indicate the system has lost coolant. The most important rule is what to do when the gauge goes into the red: pull over and shut the engine off as soon as it is safe. Continuing to drive an overheating engine, even a short distance, can warp the cylinder head or blow a head gasket and turn a modest repair into a major one.
The reason all of this matters more in our area is the terrain and the heat together.
